A PET dog stolen from a padlocked back garden has been found on a railway line.

Owners Rachel and Kieran Wade were delighted after their beloved Betsy was spotted and rescued just a few feet from the train tracks in Kibworth Harcourt on Tuesday afternoon.

Betsy, a chow chow aged two-anda-half, was taken from the couple’s back garden in Barnards Way, in Kibworth Harcourt, at about 8.50pm on Saturday, having been let out for 10 minutes.

The theft was reported in the Mercury and on our website, LeicestershireLive, along with a desperate appeal by Rachel and Kieran.

They also contacted the police about the theft and posted messages on social media.

“I was at home wrapping Christmas presents when my phone went with a message,” said Rachel, a 28-year-old teacher.

“It was a woman who was out walking her dog and she thought she had spotted Betsy.

“She sent us a picture and we knew straight away it was her.

“Kieran and I jumped in the car and went to Warwick Park where the woman had seen Betsy,” said Rachel.

“Kieran had to climb over a fence to get to Betsy, who was on the railway, just a few feet from the line.

“It was awful. She could have been hit by a train at any time.

“We think she must have been dumped there because there’s no way she could have got over there by herself.”

Betsy has been checked over by a vet, after appearing to have a sore face, possibly from a muzzle being placed on her.

“She is okay,” said Rachel. “She is still very anxious after her ordeal but we are getting there.

“It is just brilliant to have her back home safe and sound. We would like to thank everyone who passed on their best wishes and helped us through social media.

“Getting Betsy back is the best Christmas present I have ever had.”
