Their first goal was a bit lucky, says Vardy
LEICESTER City striker Jamie Vardy has revealed that he and his team-mates were “disappointed” to be level with Manchester United at half-time during Saturday’s encounter, writes Archie Griggs.
The Foxes came from behind twice to claim a deserved point and end United’s 10-game winning run away from home.
Vardy said they felt they should have gone into the break with a one-goal lead, claiming that Marcus Rashford’s opener was helped by an element of luck.
However, he praised the team’s character in coming back twice.
“I think we were a bit disappointed coming in drawing 1-1,” Vardy told BT Sport after the final whistle.
“I thought their goal was a bit lucky, but that’s one of those things in football – it’s about how you react and we’ve reacted brilliantly with Barnsey getting his finish and then it was all about doing more of the same and keeping probing to get and get into goalscoring positions.”
Vardy was initially thought to have scored the late equaliser, but it was eventually given as an Axel Tuanzebe own goal by the Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Panel, with the Foxes forward credited for an assist.
Even Vardy said post-match: “I don’t think I’ll get that goal, I think it might just be going wide, but at the end of the day it got us a point we thought we thoroughly deserved,” he said. “It’s all about patience, you can’t score with every attack. “I think we’ve played really well against a really good team, defended resolutely, to get a point at the end of it we can be happy with that.”
