A MAN tried to hide an improvised crack cocaine pipe down his trousers when police raided his flat.

Farid Abasi’s home in Newtown Street, near Leicester prison, was targeted in September, city magistrates heard.

Newtown Street and neighbouring West Street are the focus of an ongoing police operation to tackle drug dealing and associated crime.

The campaign has seen a number of nuisance tenants evicted and drugs recovered.

Abasi, 24, appeared before magistrates to admit possession of cannabis and crack cocaine.

Prosecutor Neill Hollett told the court: “Officers used force to gain entry and detain the defendant. As they entered, he tried to put something down his trousers and was immediately searched.

“The officers found 5.7g of crack in his hand and an improvised crack pipe down his trousers.

“He was arrested, and made full admissions about the crack and some cannabis the officers also found.

“He said both were for his own use.”

Abasi, told the court: “He has previous convictions for drug-related offences.

“He was fully co-operative with the police in interview and did not try to blame anyone else present in his flat. “He accepted the drugs were for his own use and has taken full responsibility for his actions.

“He has not used drugs since.” Magistrates fined Abasi £120 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34. The drugs were confiscated and will be destroyed.
