THE first hours of the new year saw two Leicester families welcoming new additions.

Two baby girls – one at Leicester General and one at Leicester Royal Infirmary – were born within two minutes of each other at about 1.15am on New Year’s Day.

Preety Pardiptkumar and her husband, Ghanshyam Tandel, were delighted to welcome their 5lb 5oz daughter.

Ghanshyam, 36, of Spinney Hills, said: “We came to the hospital at about 5pm (on New Year’s Eve) and it all went very well.

“We are so happy to have our second child. We have also a have a son, aged four, and we are grateful to God for giving us a baby girl.

“We don’t believe in finding out the gender, so it was a nice surprise.

“We have our son already and we wanted to have a girl, so our wish came true. The baby is fine and my wife is doing very well, also.

“It’s very nice to have a baby born on New Year’s Day – it turns the occasion into a double celebration.”

At the same time Preety was giving birth at Leicester General, another mother was giving birth to a bouncing baby girl at the infirmary.

Emilie, who gave her first name only, gave birth to her second daughter, Noemie, weighing in at 8lb 3oz. Emilie, 39, who lives in the city centre, said things were a bit different this time around with the Covid pandemic affecting hospitals, but was thankful that her partner, Joaquin, 46, was able to be with her when she gave birth.

The couple already have 20-month-old daughter, Daphne.

Emilie said: “We are thrilled to have our second little girl - it is a great start to our year. a

“We hope that 2021 brings joy and happiness, and that baby Noemie can meet her grandparents soon.”

Emilie only arrived at the hospital at about 11.30pm on New Year’s Eve, and things went smoothly.

She said: “It all went very quickly and I’m feeling absolutely fine.

“We had our first daughter 20 months ago and it’s very nice to have another girl – they can be friends, hopefully!”
