PLAYER RATINGS

-

KASPER SCHMEICHEL: Helpless for Carroll’s goal and did not have much to do beyond that, bar a couple of routine stops. Played sweeper keeper to cut out one Newcastle counter in the first half, while exhausted his lungs with 90 minutes of instruction and encouragement. 6/10

JAMES JUSTIN: Not quite as effective as in recent games, but still stood up strong defensively. With Albrighton sticking to his flank, there wasn’t much room for him to run into, so he didn’t have a great impact in attack. 6/10

WESLEY FOFANA: Superb at reading the game and halting attacks, making one vital intervention just before the first goal. He didn’t always get it right once he intercepted, but his charge up the wing for the opener helped create space. 8/10

JONNY EVANS: Celebrated his 33rd birthday, and a new contract, with a fine performance. Kept Wilson quiet by cutting out crosses and stepping out of defence, while he played a few more of those lovely crossfield passes. 8/10

TIMOTHY CASTAGNE: Too negative in the first half, choosing to play backwards when there was space ahead, but improved in the second period. Set up Vardy for a good chance and made an inch-perfect sliding tackle in the box. 7/10

WILFRED NDIDI: The only man to make more interceptions than the referee, Ndidi was very good again in getting about the pitch and snuffing out Newcastle advances. His stamina to press at the death and keep the hosts at bay was also vital. 8/10

YOURI TIELEMANS: Played lots of dissecting passes into Maddison’s feet, but also a fair few out of play before popping up with a brilliant finish for the second goal, sweeping home with a beauty of a bending strike. 8/10

MARC ALBRIGHTON: Showed some excellent footwork to dribble in and out of heavy Newcastle pressure, but his final ball was lacking until he rolled the perfect cross into Tielemans’ path for the second. As always, he was tireless in his running. 7/10

JAMES MADDISON: Looked extremely dangerous early on, then jarred his knee in an incident that looked like ending his afternoon. Picked himself up and while he was quiet for the rest of the game, he still thumped in the opener. 7/10

HARVEY BARNES: Beat his man with some terrific dribbling, but too often his pass was lacking, or he held on to it when a ball was there to be played. He did get it right for the first goal, though. 6/10

JAMIE VARDY: Saved his better finishing for the chances where he was offside, with other good opportunities going begging, but did well to set up Maddison’s opener with some intricate footwork. 7/10 SUBSTITUTE

CAGLAR SOYUNCU: On for the final few minutes, but didn’t have a lot to do, despite Newcastle putting the pressure on. N/A
