Officers’ second collision arrest

-

POLICE have made a second arrest after a driver smashed into a gas substation, causing a gas leak that required homes to be evacuated.

The incident happened at 6.30am on New Year’s Day in The Ridings, Rothley.

The driver fled the scene and the emergency services set up a wide cordon around the area, asking some residents to leave their homes due to a ruptured gas pipe.

Paramedics were on standby at the scene while firefighters and gas engineers dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

Leicestershire Police arrested a 33-year-old man on New Year’s Day but he was later released without charge with “no further action”.

On Sunday, the police announced a further arrest of a 33-year-old but will not comment on whether it is the same person.

Police said in a statement on Sunday night: “A 33-year-old man was arrested earlier (today) on suspicion of failing to stop at a road traffic collision and perverting the course of justice.

“He has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

“Inquiries are ongoing into the collision.

“The incident caused some disruption as officers assisted with road closures in the area and the evacuation of a small number of properties as a precaution.

“Those affected have since returned home and roads reopened.”
