A 26-YEAR-OLD has appeared in court charged with stabbing a man and starting a fire which caused “substantial damage” to his flat.

Mubarak Jibril appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court following the incidents in the St Matthew’s area of Leicester in the early hours of Sunday.

Jibril, of Down Street, off Melton Road, in the Belgrave area of the city, is charged with attempted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, arson with intent to endanger life and arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.

Previously, police said its officers were approached by the injured man in Eldon Street, near Lee Circle, at 3am on Sunday.

Outlining details of the incident for magistrates, prosecutor Kwok Wan said officers then went to his flat in Ottawa Road and discovered it was on fire.

He added: “There was another party in the property who was asleep and completely unaware of the fire until the police woke him to get him out of the property.”

The rescued man was unhurt, police said.

However, three officers were treated in hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation.

The fire was extinguished by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service but caused “substantial damage”, police said.

An application for bail during Monday’s brief hearing was refused and Jibril was remanded back into custody.

He did not enter pleas to any of the charges and he is due to appear by video link at Leicester Crown Court on Monday, February 8.

A 40-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released from custody and will face no further action, police have previously confirmed.
