LATEST data has shown how Leicester and Leicesters­hire’s coronaviru­s rates compare to the rest of the country’s as the third national lockdown begins.

On Monday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed the strictest measures seen since the country first went into lockdown in March last year, warning the new, more infectious strain of Covid-19 was threatenin­g to overwhelm the NHS.

Schools and colleges have been closed, with learning switched to online, and people have been ordered to stay at home except when shopping for basics, for work when it cannot be done at home, limited exercise and to seek medical care.

Infection rates are rising across the country, and the latest list of 315 English council areas by seven-day incidence showed increases in Leicester and all seven districts of Leicesters­hire.

The local list below has been compiled using verified Public Health England figures in the week up to New Year’s Eve.

Oadby and Wigston stands at 137th of the 315 areas with a rate of 492.9. cases per 100,000 people.

Leicester’s rate of 427.7 cases per 100,000 people places it at 172nd place nationally.

Harborough’s rate of 400.8 cases per 100,000 people is just below the national average of 401.1 on December 31, and places it in 184th position.

Blaby stands at 210th place with a seven-day incidence of 347.7 cases per 100,000 people.

A rate of 311.7 cases per 100,000 people places North West Leicesters­hire in 236th position

Melton borough is in 251st place with an infection rate of 291 cases per 100,000 people, just ahead of Hinckley and Bosworth in 262nd position with a rate of 274.9 cases per 100,000.

Charnwood has the lowest rate in Leicesters­hire, 272.7, and is placed at 266th nationally.
