WHEN TO WEAR A MASK
SINCE June, there have been legal requirements to wear a face mask in certain situations.
The ban on travelling on trains and buses without a mask was introduced in the middle of June.
The law was updated on July 24 to require anyone who does not have a specific reason for not wearing a mask to wear them inside shops, banks and other public indoor spaces.
There are still no requirements to wear a face mask in any outdoor settings, but people are banned from meeting with more than one person from outside their household or bubble in any public place and when they do, they are asked to stay 2m apart.
You must wear a face covering in the following indoor settings:
■ Public transport, taxis and private hire vehicles and transport hubs;
■ Shops and supermarkets and shopping centres;
■ Premises providing hospitality, except when seated at a table to eat or drink;
■ Post offices, banks, building societies, etc, estate and lettings agents;
■ Theatres;
■ Premises providing personal care and beauty treatments;
■ Premises providing veterinary services;
■ Visitor attractions and entertainment venues;
■ Libraries and public reading rooms;
■ Places of worship;
■ Funeral service providers;
■ Community centres, youth centres and social clubs;
■ Exhibition and conference centres;
■ Public areas in hotels and hostels;
■ Storage and distribution facilities. The Government advice adds: “You should also wear a face covering in indoor places not listed where social distancing may be difficult. Face coverings are needed in NHS settings.”
There is also a long list of exceptions for the above settings.
