A DRINK-DRIVER was caught in the act when he decided to move his car a short distance on to his driveway.

Police happened to be nearby dealing with another incident and were immediately alerted by loud revving and bangs as Palvinder Singh put his car into gear and drove it.

The officers watched as he moved the vehicle on to the front of his property in Flamborough Road, Thurnby Lodge, Leicester, and walk back into his house.

Concerned by the manner of his driving, the officers suspected he was under the influence and went to the house to speak to him.

Singh, 28, failed a breath test and was taken into custody, where further analysis established he was more than twice the legal alcohol limit.

Prosecutor Kwok Wan told Leicester Magistrates’ Court that Singh committed the offence at 11.30pm on November 9,

Mr Wan said: “The officers heard a vehicle with its engine revving very loudly, followed by a loud bang as it was put into gear before it started reversing.

“They saw the driver get out and make his way to the front door. Suspecting he was under the influence of an intoxicant, the officers went to that address.

“The driver eventually came out and failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken into custody.”

He was tested again at Euston Street police station.

“The reading was 76mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath – more than twice the legal limit of 35mg,” Mr Wan said.

Singh appeared without legal representation.

He told the court he had been drinking at home and had decided to move his car a short distance from the road to his driveway – a distance of approximately the width of two houses, he estimated.

Asked how a driving disqualification would affect him, he said his wife was pregnant and he would not be able to take her to medical appointments or to run errands for her

Magistrates banned him from driving for 17 months and fined him £120.

He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and prosecution costs of £85.

His ban will be reduced if he pays for and completes a drink-driving awareness course.
