STICKING to the guidelines is crucial for football’s short-term future, even if the rules on celebrations “spoil” the game, Marc Albrighton has said.

As coronavirus cases rise around the country, they do at football clubs too, with several Premier League games postponed over recent weeks.

And with players open to criticism if they celebrate goals by hugging their team-mates, the

Premier League are concerned that if the rules aren’t followed, the government could reverse their decision to allow elite football to continue.

Leicester City winger Albrighton, right, has said those rules will be “difficult” to abide by, but he knows keeping the game going for the morale of fans up and down the country is more important.

He told talkSPORT: “We have to take it seriously, whether you’re at training or at home.

“The government have let us carry on with football and I know the Premier League are putting everything in place to help that continue.

“People want to watch football at home, it’s keeping the country going, people are enjoying that there is a game on TV every night, and we want to keep it like that, so we need to stick to the guidelines.

“With the celebrating of goals, it’s going to be very difficult not to celebrate with your team-mates, and I do think it spoils it a bit.

“But if we’re cautious and try to do as much as we can to abide by the guidelines, hopefully football will continue and people will be able to watch these games.”

City face Southampton at the King Power Stadium tomorrow.
