Early-risers make sure everything at bakery is fresh

-

THE city has a new bakery, opened by a chef and with everything made in-house.

John’s Dough Bakery, in Welford Road, has been launched by John Morrey in the former home of Gordons, a bakers and butchers that traded for over 50 years until its closure last year.

It is John’s first bakery. He has been helped to get it up and running by his three sons – fellow chefs Michael and Danny, and bricklayer Josh.

They all helped to build the counters out of upcycled wood and Danny is also helping out with the baking.

John said: “The reason we decided to open here is because I live locally and me and my kids used to be regulars at the old bakery.

“Also, we know that the public have been crying out for a bakery and cob shop since Gordons closed last year.

“I am a chef and so are two of my sons, who are helping me with this venture, and we all have a love for baked goods and bread.”

John leased the unit in late December and he and his sons spent the next few weeks refurbishing it.

He said produce will vary from day to day, but will always include freshly baked breads ranging in flavour, as well as sweet and savoury treats including brownies, doughnuts and sausage rolls.

There is also a hot and cold cob selection available all day.

“Everything we do is made in-house in the early hours,” said John, who added that his specialities are filled and ring doughnuts, double chocolate brownies and sausage rolls.

■■John’s Dough Bakery is open from 8am until 3pm, Monday to Saturday. There are plans to open earlier as the mornings become brighter. It is at 465 Welford Road, Leicester.

SCoUTS will be out and about cleaning up the county as part of their Community Impact badge.

They are trying to raise awareness of the issues litter creates while at the same time cleaning up the area.

Leicestershire Scouts Team’s idea was for a county-wide Community Impact project that could be done while observing Covid restrictions.

They are hoping to engage Scouts and their families by offering a full programme of activities encouraging them to be part of Mucky March.

Activities include: exploring the environment and seeing the impact litter has; designing custom litter pickers; creating posters and raising awareness the problem.

As part of the project, Scouts were encouraged to come up with a badge design to wear on uniforms.

The competition was won by Aoibhe, from Ashby Hastings Scout Group. She said “I love drawing and really enjoyed designing the badge for everyone. I didn’t think I would win.

“I want to help look after where we live and was shocked by people who do not seem to care what damage they are doing throwing rubbish. In a short distance, we collected six bags and found oil canisters and tyres”.

Poppy, from Countesthorpe Scouts, was also surprised by the amount of rubbish left around. “I decided to take part in Mucky March to help save the animals. There were loads of empty unused dog poo bags,” she said.

The event runs this month and continues throughout March and has already see more than 150 bags collected over 340 volunteering hours.

Most Scouts are also separating cans found and donating them to Leicester Royal Infirmary Helipad Appeal.

Leicestershire’s county

commissioner, Carol Black, said: “It has been great to be able to offer Mucky March as a county-wide community impact project.

“Scouting in lockdown has been a challenge for all groups.

“Not only practically, learning new skills by running programmes online, but also constantly adapting programmes through different Covid restrictions.

“Many groups have not been able to meet in person for over a year so providing an active programme has been hard.

“It has been amazing to see how Scouting has adapted.”
