Warning issued after driver

A MOTORIST had to be cut free from the wreckage of his overturned car after a crash involving another vehicle in a village near Loughborou­gh.

Firefighte­rs from Castle Donington fire station attended the incident in the village of Sutton Bonington to assist colleagues from Nottingham­shire Fire and Rescue Service’s East Leake station.

The crash happened shortly after 8am on Monday.

The Leicesters­hire crew shared images of the crash scene, including photograph­s of the overturned car on its side with its roof removed, to followers of the station’s official Twitter account.

They were accompanie­d by a warning to drivers not to allow themselves to be distracted by “phones, make-up and shavers” during their journey.

The message said: “This morning, we attended a road traffic collision in Sutton Bonington where we worked alongside crews from East Leake to cut the casualty free.

“Please make sure you do not get distracted whilst driving – phones, make-up and shavers shouldn’t be used whilst driving!”

A spokesman for Leicesters­hire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at 8.07am from police to assist at the scene of a collision in the village of Sutton Bonington, near Loughborou­gh.

“A crew from Castle Donington fire station attended and reported back on a collision involving two cars.”

He added: “One of the vehicles was on its side and a male casualty inside had to be extricated by removing the roof of the vehicle.

“He was conveyed to hospital by ambulance.”

The crash happened in Station Road, at its junction with Melton Lane.

The road was closed for several hours during the rescue and recovery operation.

A police spokeswoma­n said: “A road in Sutton Bonington is now clear after a two-car collision which left one car on its side.

“Officers were called to assist fire and ambulance crews.

“Injuries are not reported to be serious but one driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.”
