New crash appeal as man dies in hospital

POLICE have revealed that a man who was badly injured after a five-car crash on the M1 died in hospital.

The man, who was in his 30s, was taken to University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshi­re on Wednesday, March 10 after the pile-up on the M1 northbound between Lutterwort­h and Leicester just before 6.30pm.

He died on Friday, March 19, police said last night as they made a new appeal for witnesses to get in touch.

A number of others were also taken to hospital after the incident, which involved a BMW 1 Series, a BMW 3 Series, Skoda Octavia, Ford Mondeo and a Renault lorry, but they were not seriously injured.

A 24-year-old man arrested on suspicion of failing to stop was later released as police continue their investigat­ion.

Officers want to speak to drivers or occupants of other cars in the vicinity at the time, particular­ly those inside a dark-coloured Vauxhall Astra and a silver Ford Focus, which moved from the outside lane to avoid the vehicles involved.

Drivers of the following vehicles, which were travelling northbound between Junction 20 and Junction 21 shortly before 6.30pm are also asked to contact the police: a red Fiat Panda; a white Volkswagen SUV (most likely a T-Roc); A black Ford Transit van; a dark-coloured, possibly grey, Vauxhall Corsa (2015 model); a silver Renault Master van or Vauxhall Vivaro, which was travelling behind a Skoda Octavia; and a white Mitsubishi L200.
