Man found driving with 20-year-old provisional licence
NO L PLATES OR QUALIFIED DRIVER IN CAR
A MAN’s car was seized when police officers caught him on the road using a 20-year-old provisional driving licence.
Police officers pulled him over in the city centre when they became suspicious of the manner of his driving.
A routine check discovered he was driving on a provisional licence, which he had obtained at the turn of the century.
People who hold provisional licences must be supervised at all times when they are at the wheel, either by a qualified driving instructor or by a driver over the age of 21 who has held a full driving licence for at least three years, and must display L plates.
However, the man’s vehicle was not displaying L-plates, and his passenger was not qualified to be teaching him, police said.
He was detained by members of the force’s roads policing team.
The officers shared their story on social media, saying it was “unbelievable”.
A police spokeswoman said the driver had told officers at the scene that he had obtained the provisional licence over 20 years ago.
She said the man was detained late on Friday night.
“Due to the manner a car was being driven in the city centre officers pulled it over,” said the spokeswoman.
“The driver was identified as having only a provisional licence and, given he wasn’t displaying any L-plates nor did he have a valid passenger with him.
“He has therefore been reported for summons to court for driving otherwise in accordance with a licence.
“The vehicle, a Honda Civic, was seized.”
