ENGELBERT Humperdinck has wished his sister a very happy golden anniversary from his home in Los Angeles.

The Leicester singer was unable to travel back to join the celebrations with his sister, Patricia Loseby, 77, and her husband Colin, 81, due to the pandemic.

Instead, he joined in with the rest of the family to send Patricia and Colin a short video message, which were compiled and shown to the couple on their anniversary on Saturday, April 3.

Speaking in the video, Engelbert said: “Hello Pat and Colin, this is your brother and brother-in-law all the way over in Los Angeles. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you both a very, very happy golden anniversary on this very auspicious day.

“I only wish that my family and I were able to come over and spend the time with you and have a couple of glasses of wine and things like that.

“It’s a little impossible at this particular time because of the pandemic situation and other things that have prevented us from being with you, otherwise we would be there with our close-knit family of loving, loving brothers and sisters and everybody, nieces and nephews, so wonderful.

“It’s a great family, I am sorry I am not with you. God bless you and have a wonderful, wonderful day, okay?”

The pair originally met shortly before Patricia’s 18th birthday and immediately hit it off.

The couple loved to dance and often visited the Palais De Danse on Leicester’s Humberstone Gate.

However, the couple went their separate ways, only to reunite years later and tie the knot – with their wedding photo even making the front page of the Leicester Mercury, left.

Sadly, due to Covid-19 restrictions, Patricia and Colin could not celebrate their big milestone the way they wanted to, but the rest of the family came together to make sure their day was as special as it could be.

Jacqueline Holford, Patricia and Colin’s daughter, said: “It’s a great achievement!

“Ideally they wanted the entire family to be together, as we have a very big family, but because of the rule of six they couldn’t do that this year.

“Instead, all of their family members, including Uncle Engelbert, sent a short video saying ‘happy anniversary’ and sharing some kind words, as they couldn’t be with them on the day.

“The four of us that could join them had a big meal that I cooked for us all, with my cousin also making a cake for the day – and both Pat and Colin looked over the videos that were sent to them.

“They wanted to do something a bit bigger for their 50th wedding anniversary, but it’s just not possible for the time being.

“It was lovely to receive such a kind video off Uncle Engelbert, too. He calls my mum every day on the phone. They share a really close bond.”

Jacqueline also gave an insight into how Patricia and Colin have been getting by during the pandemic, as well as how they spent the past 50 years together.

She said: “My dad used to work as an electrician before taking over his family’s market stall selling fruit and veg in Leicester – retiring in 2004 – while my mum owned her own salon but stopped working in the early 90s.

“Now, my dad enjoys spending time in the garden, while my mum loves doing her crosswords and soaps. My dad’s also a massive Tigers fan so he’s missing being in the stadium at the moment!”

When asked what the secret was to their long marriage, Patricia replied: “It’s agreeing with the wife!”, while Colin said “to go along with things and keep my mouth shut, as well as spending time in the shed!”

Jacqueline added: “I think a sense of humour is the best thing. They keep each other entertained to say the least! When the restrictions are lifted, we are looking to get all of the family back together and celebrate the occasion properly.”
