A DRIVER paid a heavy price when he agreed to pick up a pal who was stranded, as police seized his car because he was not insured to drive it.

Officers waiting with the first driver made a routine check on the rescuer and found he was not covered to drive either, so they confiscated his vehicle, too.

While the officers were dealing with the pair in Tudor Road, they chanced across a further three cars whose owners had overlooked the basics of lawful driving.

The officers, members of the force’s roads policing unit (RPU), seized all five cars in quick succession shortly after 2pm on Thursday.

To get their vehicles back from the police, the owners will have to provide proof of insurance.

They will also pay a release fee of up to £200 plus a storage fee of £20 for each day the vehicle was held. The RPU officers tweeted: “If stopped for driving with no insurance it’s always good to make sure the person picking you up has insurance.”

A force spokesman said of the first incident: “The driver was found to have no insurance or a valid licence and the car was seized.

“Two cars that subsequently arrived at the scene were also found to be driven by drivers who did not hold insurance.

“Those cars were also seized. “While still in the area, a further two cars were stopped and their drivers were also found to be without insurance.

“Those cars were seized as well.” Police can hand out a minimum fixed penalty fine of £300 and/or six penalty points for the offence of driving without insurance.

More serious cases can be referred to the courts, which can impose unlimited fines and driving bans.
