A GROUP is looking for volunteers to help others learn to read.

Read Easy Leicester and District group is looking for more helpers to support its work.

More than 17,000 adults in Leicester can’t read or struggle with everyday reading, and it wants to change that with a proven confidential programme of free one-to-one volunteer-led adult reading coaching.

Verity Cross, regional adviser for the East Midlands, said: “To help us launch an adult literacy group in Leicester and surrounding areas we’re looking for local people to support the development of a new group by volunteering.

“Volunteering for Read Easy is fun and fulfilling, and we are looking for people who are committed and passionate. In exchange for your time and commitment, you will receive full training, meet a diverse range of people and be part of a genuinely lifechanging organisation.

“We know from experience that learning to read really does change lives and being part of the process is very special. We have a number of exciting roles for a chance to make a difference. It’s a great opportunity to either put existing skills to good use or develop new ones”

Read Easy UK supports over 30 affiliated groups across the country, stretching from Plymouth to Manchester. It is hoped there could be 40 groups by September.

“The stark reality is that 2.4 million adults in the UK cannot read, while 2.5 million struggle to read,” Verity added.
