Creative Klara’s Easter surprises

MYSTERY OF BUNNIES IS SOLVED!

- By DAVID OWEN david.owen@reachplc.com

MYSTERIOUS little bunnies – and “gingerbread eggs” – were popping up in parks across Leicester city centre over the Easter bank holiday.

Keen-eyed youngsters, out enjoying fresh air with their parents or guardians over the weekend, can’t have failed to notice they had some peculiar company.

The cute curiosities – and some hard boiled egg bunnies – had been hidden in plain view in Town Hall Square, Bede Park, Castle Park and Jubilee Square for children to discover and take home with them to enjoy.

Their kind-hearted architect has now revealed herself – and she has a bit of form when it comes to this sort of caper.

Klára Simándi, a retired teacher who lives in the city centre, was the person responsible for leaving mini reindeer made from pine cones on benches, under trees and on lawns for children to find over Christmas.

The 73-year-old decided to cheer youngsters up again over Easter, with the coronavirus lockdown and social distancing restrictions continuing, for the time being, in Leicester.

Speaking to the Mercury, Klára, who ran an activity group every Saturday morning for children from the city’s small Hungarian community until the pandemic hit, said: “During the strict lockdown measures at Christmas I made little reindeer for the children of Leicester to take home to cheer them up.

“I was so hopeful we could prepare for Easter together (like two years ago) with the little children’s group I used to run on Saturdays.

“But, unfortunately, this is still not safe to do so.

“However, at least we could visit parks and playgrounds!”

She added: “So I thought that I would surprise the children by making little Easter Bunnies and hiding them in parks peeking out from branches of trees.

“Hoping that they would be found and taken home by the children.

“I also made some hard boiled eggs into bunnies and decorated gingerbread in the traditional Hungarian style.”
