Winners of B league set to be decided in play-off showdown

THE Leicestershire and Rutland B league gets under way on Wednesday, April 14 and there are two new clubs involved in the 2021 tournament, writes Jennifer Prentice.

Lutterworth and Scraptoft GC have joined for the new season, which has meant changes to the league.

The 12 competing clubs will now have a two-division format for the first time since the league was launched in 2009.

But this year there will be an end-of-season play-off between the two divisional leaders to determine the champions.

Group B league chairman Steve Winder, a past captain of Market Harborough GC, said: “This shows that the league is going from strength to strength.

“Golfers enjoy the great camaraderie and friendships that are made and, of course, the great battles between teams.

“We missed all this during the past difficult season when lockdown restrictions were in force because of the coronavirus and look forward to the restart shortly.

“Hopefully more clubs will want to join the league and there is good scope now we have a two-division format in place.

“Anyone interested should contact me.”

Wet weather delayed the 2019 league final until early last year when Cosby became champions, with Glen Gorse runners-up.

Winder added: “Now we look forward to an exciting season after so much disappointment in not being able to play competitive golf, including the league matches for so long.

“It will be good to be able to meet up again with golfng friends old and new at clubs throughout the county.”
