A GRANDAD’s life was saved by heroic passers-by after he had a heart attack and collapsed while litter picking with a friend in a country lane.

Andrew Gough, 75, regularly tidies the verges of the outskirts of his home village, Sheepy Magna, near Market Bosworth.

He was out on his rounds with his friend Roger Frost, former landlord at the Black Horse pub in the village, last month when he became ill.

The pals had become separated in Sheepy Road, between Pinwall and the village, when Mr Gough collapsed and fell to the ground.

Fortunately, a couple of workmen in a van saw Mr Gough stumbled and collapsed in the verge. They stopped and began to administer CPR and called 999.

Two other separate drivers, a man and a woman, also stopped and helped in the efforts to keep Mr Gough alive, following the directions of the call handler.

Through their efforts, they managed to restart his heart, keeping him alive for the 10 minutes before paramedics and the air ambulance arrived.

Mr Gough was taken to Walsgrave Hospital, in Coventry, and induced into a coma.

He had heart surgery and treatment for cardiac arrest and was discharged on Monday, March 29.

His family say he is now at home and making a good recovery.

They say they have been able to track down and personally thank the three men who were involved in the life-saving effort, but have not yet been able to identify and speak to the woman.

Andrew’s son, Matthew, said: “My dad was dead and now is alive. It really is a miracle.

“We are so grateful to the four passers-by and emergency call handler. We want to thank them all for bringing my dad back from the dead.

“Their heroic actions followed by the hospital care blew us all away and fill me with tears when I stop to think of it.

“We have been unable to get in touch with the female life-saver and hope that if she is reading this she knows that her efforts saved my dad’s life.”
