City barber shop ‘honoured’ at MP’s TV shout-out

-

A LEICESTER barber shop owner says he is “honoured” to have been mentioned by city MP Jon Ashworth during an interview on Good Morning Britain.

Mr Ashworth was speaking to hosts Adil Ray and Kate Garraway about coronavirus passports on Tuesday when he name-checked his barber, Morelli’s, in Queens Road, Clarendon Park.

When Kate asked whether he had received the vaccine or whether he was too young, Mr Ashworth took the opportunity to mention Morelli’s, which is in his Leicester South constituency. He replied: “I’m far too young, far too young. Of course I am!

“Don’t be misled by my unusually grey hair for someone of my age.

“I can’t wait to get a haircut, I cannot wait to get down to Morelli’s on Queens Road, Leicester, to get my hair cut.

“I look like Alan Partridge!” Morelli’s is currently getting ready to reopen on Monday, and the shop’s staff said they were grateful for the MP’s support.

Owner Fash Karami said: “It’s been fantastic. It’s an honour for us to be mentioned on national television.

“He’s mentioned us on TV before through lockdown and I just really appreciate the support he continues to show us. He’s been a customer here for as long as I’ve worked here.

“He’s a fantastic guy, he’s very concerned with businesses in the area, he’s always walking by and checking in with everyone on Queens Road.

“We’ve had plenty of chats with him in the past year with the impact of Covid-19, too. He didn’t have to do that, it’s great that even when he’s doing TV interviews he thinks of businesses in his constituency.”
