More than half Brits can’t place city on UK map

A SURVEY has found that more than 50 per cent of people cannot pinpoint Leicester on a map of the UK.

In a study of 4,117 British people, 56 per cent of those who were interviewed did not have a clue where Leicester was.

The city joins good company, though, with Newcastle-uponTyne being the number one place that couldn’t be pinpointed, with a total of 68 per cent, and Stoke-onTrent coming in second place with 65 per cent unsure as to where it is on a map.

Sheffield comes in third place, with 64 per cent, Northampton in fourth place with 63 per cent, and Plymouth rounding out the top five with 60 per cent unfamiliar as to where it is.

Fellow East Midlands city, Nottingham, also made the list – with 59 per cent of British people not knowing where it is on a map.

The most known city in this study is, of course, London, with 89 per cent of people interviewed knowing where the English capital is.

The second most-known city is seaside resort, Brighton, with 82 per cent knowing where it is.

While the Welsh capital city, Cardiff, comes in third place with 75 per cent able to point it out on a map.

The study, run by TheKnowledgeAcademy, gave the applicants 20 different cities across the UK and asked them to pinpoint them on a map – with any answer in a 15-mile radius of the city being considered correct. Only cities with a population of more than 200,000 were included in the study, equalling 29 overall, and any cities within a 15-mile radius of each other were not included together.

The study shows that many people across the UK are unable to place Leicester and other major cities in the UK – with a worryingly high 11 per cent of people not knowing where London was on a map.

This even came as a surprise to the people that ran the study, with TheKnowledgeAcademy saying: “When it comes to the cities we’re more familiar with, the capital London comes out on top.

“Though whilst 89 per cent know where it is, a shocking 11 per cent still couldn’t pinpoint it on the map.”
