Sculpture artworks starting to take shape
EIGHT-FOOT-TALL sculptures are beginning to take shape ahead of Loros Hospice’s Rocket Round Leicester trail this summer.
The 40 sculptures will together create Leicester’s biggest public art event.
The trail launches on Monday, July 19.
Among the artists designing rockets is Anita Argent. She said: “It’s wonderful to be able to assist Loros in raising funds for its vital work.
“With so many events being cancelled within the past year, it’s fantastic to have a public art event to look forward to.
“It’s even more exciting when you are one of the contributing artists.
“For my rocket design, I took inspiration from Leicester itself, using the distinct characteristics of its built environment to represent the diverse spectrum of people who inhabit it.”
Artist Megan Evans said: “Seeing the sculptures coming to life makes you look forward to the summer and get excited to get out there and start visiting sculpture trails.”
Anita and Megan’s sculptures have been sponsored by Leicester City Council and Upton Steel respectively.
The final designs are being kept secret until the trail is live.
At the end of the event, each sculpture will be auctioned to raise money for Loros to allow it to continue to care for more than 2,500 terminally ill people every year.
There are still a handful of sponsorship packages available for organisations to sponsor a sculpture.
Schools, colleges and community groups can also join in by signing up to the Rocket Round Leicester Learning Programme.
They will have the opportunity to decorate a Junior Jet, a miniature version of the rocket sculptures.
