Cathedral service to honour Prince Philip

-

A SPECIAL service in memory of the late Duke of Edinburgh, HRH Prince Philip, is to take place at Leicester Cathedral this afternoon.

The service of remembrance and thanksgiving will be held at 5pm and will be streamed live online.

A number of public figures from the city and county, led by Mike Kapur OBE, the Queen’s Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, have been invited to attend in person.

Buckingham Palace announced Prince Philip’s death at the age of 99 in a statement on Friday.

Mr Kapur said: “This service of remembrance and thanksgiving for HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will allow us to come together and reflect upon the dedicated public service that His Royal Highness carried out for so many years.”

The Bishop of Leicester, the Right Reverend Martyn Snow, and the Dean of Leicester, the Very Reverend David Monteith, will lead the service and music will be provided by members of the cathedral choir.

Bishop Martyn said: “It’s important that we remember the Duke of Edinburgh’s connections with Leicester and Leicestershire and give thanks for his life.

“In particular, we will be praying for the Royal Family in their grief and we hope people will join us online.”

Echoing the Bishop’s words, the Dean said: “His Royal Highness honoured us with his presence in the cathedral and now we honour him.

“Each life changes us and so too with each death we are reshaped. Reflection, prayers and thanksgiving for Her Majesty and her family will help us all to respond to this sad and significant loss in our nation.”

The public are invited to join the service virtually via the Leicester Cathedral Facebook page where it will live-streamed from 5pm.
