Park’s grassed area will not be touched

-

IN response to the letter from your correspondent, Keith Ludlam, (“Park is not cash cow for council, it

belongs to us”, Mailbox, April 5): I am sure Mr Ludlam did not intend to mislead the reader, but the following facts really must be published:

■ 1 The grassed area of Ellis Park, Oadby will be remaining exactly the same as it is and has been for many years, well-maintained with a wellmaintained children’s area which is regularly added to and improved.

■ 2 Oadby & Wigston Borough Council has plans to remove the derelict swimming pool which has been replaced by a far superior and modern, purpose-built swimming pool at Parklands.

The derelict structure is to be replaced by good-quality social housing, thus avoiding building on green field sites with a purpose built replacement bowling green, a modern, purpose-built pavilion for the bowlers and a modern, purposebuilt facility for the youth replacing the outdated building that they are currently forced to use, and replacing the unsuitable and outdated prefabricated Walter Charles Centre, which surely was meant as a temporary structure.

■ 3 There are plans being made for improved tennis courts, either in Uplands Park or Parklands.

I cannot emphasise enough that the recreational grass area of Ellis Park will not be touched. This has been an ugly rumour going around for far too long.

As Lib Dem councillors we are proud of the way we look after our parks and open spaces, always bearing in mind getting the best value for money for our council taxpayers and residents of Oadby, as this is within our manifesto commitment.

Councillor Jeffrey Kaufman, Oadby & Wigston Borough Council
