A NEW motorbike showroom is set to open at Donington Park - creating up to 50 jobs.

SuperBike Factory is taking over the site formerly occupied by the Donington Grand Prix Collection museum, in North West Leicestershire, which used to hold hundreds of classic cars.

The company said it intended to open a 1,000-bike “superstore” and cafe this summer.

It is looking to recruit motorbike technicians, sales agents and support staff.

The company, which claims to be Europe’s largest used motorbike retailer, already has a site in Macclesfield but wants to take advantage of the circuit’s motorsport history by setting up another.

It has taken over the lease of the former museum, which has been empty since autumn 2018, and has had its collection of cars removed.

Scott Behrens, chief exec of SuperBike Factory, said the location of the circuit was a big selling point when deciding to expand into the area. “SuperBike Factory is going from strength to strength, and our proposition of having super choice and super quality at super prices really is helping drive our growth,” he said.

“The opening of the Donington Park site has been part of our exciting growth plans for quite a while.

“Not only is it a highly accessible location for our customers, its heritage and association with motorsport in the UK is world-renowned. By creating another major destination for the biker community to ride out to, we are becoming part of bike culture in the UK.

“Everyone knows bikers love to tell you where they’ve been, where they’re going next and what they’re riding. SuperBike Factory Donington will be a place to come together, meet new people and share stories – and what better place than on the doorstep of motor racing heritage.”

Before its closure in 2018, the museum housed vintage and modern Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, Williams, BRM and Lotus models as well as a number of classic motorcycles, assembled by the late Leicestershire builder and motor sport enthusiast Tom Wheatcroft.
