Fresh 100 flats plan for ex-HMRC offices
PLANS have been submitted to convert a government building in the city centre into a block of flats.
A fresh application has been submitted to convert Saxon House in Causeway Lane into 100 apartments.
Plans have been submitted to Leicester City Council for the HM Revenue & Customs building to be converted.
The application site would be made into 100 homes, in the shadow of Highcross in the heart of the city, if permission is approved.
The 74,500 sq ft office block is owned by Mapeley Steps. which is looking to sell the property, with its guide price at £6.5 million.
The building was part of HMRC’s proposed office closures as the ministerial department moves into a series of regional hubs across the country.
A previous application was previously approved in 2019 which set out a 122-flat conversion of the building that required the development to be finished by January 2022.
But new plans submitted would instead see the six-storey building, which was built in 1992, converted into fewer homes - 21 studio, 49 one-bed, and 30 two-bed apartments.
An assessment on the impacts of noise from the surrounding commercial properties found that “existing commercial premises are unlikely to give rise to adverse noise impacts on the use of the proposal for residential purposes”.
The consultation period is currently open on the plans, with the council aiming to come to a decision about the property’s future on August 12.
