Gunners deal set to silence Maddison transfer talk

-

TALK around James Maddison’s future should die down as Arsenal close in on Norwegian international Martin Odegaard, writes Jordan Blackwell.

Leicester City’s number 10 has been the subject of speculation this summer with the Gunners keen on him.

However, Arsenal’s pursuit of an attacking midfielder has led them back to Real Madrid’s Odegaard, who they had on loan for the second half of last season.

It is widely reported that the Gunners have made a breakthrough in talks over the 22-year-old and could sign him for £30 million.

That deal will end discussions about Maddison moving to the Emirates Stadium, which would have required the Gunners to submit around double the figure they are splashing out on Odegaard for City to even consider a sale.

Speaking about Maddison’s future at the start of the month, Rodgers said that, contrary to reports, City had not received any approaches for him.

He added that his full focus was on life at Leicester, as well as being a new dad after welcoming baby son Leo on the final day of last month.

“He’s a busy young guy now, he’s become a father, so he’s changing nappies and everything else,” Rodgers said.

“James doesn’t change. He’s a wonderful young guy to work with. “It is what it is, it’s gossip and speculation, so you can’t get too

emotional with all of that.

“He’ll understand it’s the nature of this time of the season, with lots of stories going around.

“I know he’s very happy here and wants to be here.”
