A MAN who had been goaded into a scuffle was punched to the ground, causing him to bang his head and sustain internal bleeding.

The attack happened at Leicester’s Haymarket bus station at 8.30pm on October 12, and his attacker has now been handed a second suspended sentence by a judge at Leicester Crown Court.

Lance Carroll was said to have approached the victim, who was in conversation with a security officer, and told him to “stop mixing it” with the officer.

The court was told that 46-yearold Carroll began pushing, shoving and punching the man, causing him to fall and hit his head.

Sentencing, Judge Keith Raynor told the defendant: “This man suffered a bump to the back of the head.

“He went to Leicester Royal Infirmary and had a CT scan.

“He was found to have a collection of blood in his head.”

The court heard the victim was kept under observation in hospital before being discharged.

Carroll, of Harris Road, Beaumont Leys, Leicester, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm.

The judge told him: “You hadn’t long been out of prison before you assaulted this man at the bus station. I accept that this assault was spontaneous and a short-lived incident and that you also have drink and drug issues.

“You are a suitable candidate for rehabilitation.”

The court heard that in May this year, Carroll had been given a 20week sentence, suspended for 12 months, for an attempted theft.

But the judge said: “I’m prepared to give you another suspended sentence, of 20 weeks suspended for 18 months, which means you now have two suspended sentences.

“So if you were to commit an offence, such as going out shoplifting and then come before the court, you face getting a 40-week sentence.

“Looking at your record there’s a very good chance you’re going to be back before the court – and you know what’s at stake.”
