A MAN was remanded into custody yesterday, charged with attempting to recruit others to join him in planned terror attacks on transmitter masts.

Oliver Lewin, 37, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Courts yesterday accused of being engaged in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.

He was arrested by counter-terrorism police in a dawn raid on his home in Ferrers Road, Whitwick last week.

In court, Lewin was not required to enter any pleas during a short hearing, and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

The charges allege that Lewin, with the intention of committing acts of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention.

It is claimed that he engaged in reconnaissance of telecommunications sites in the Midlands as proposed targets to attack and purchased equipment and tools.

There are also further allegations that Lewin engaged in digging hideouts and sought to recruit other people to join him in an attack.

The alleged offences are thought to have taken place between July 24 and August 25 this year.

He was charged by detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands on Tuesday, August 31.

Police previously said the arrest was intelligence-led and there is no threat to the public.

Lewin, from Ferrers Road in Whitwick, was remanded into custody to appear at the Old Bailey on September 22.
