THE body of a woman has been discovered at a property in a Leicestershire village.

Police were called to Melton Road in Thurmaston, near Birstall, on Friday, at 3.39pm following a report of a man acting aggressively in the area and making threats.

The incident was reported to have happened near the Church Lane junction.

Melton Road was subsequently taped off between Church Lane and Lea Close as a large-scale police and ambulance service operation got under way.

Residents speculated a person was detained after officers arrived on the scene but police have not confirmed any arrests were made.

However, the force revealed it received a call shortly afterwards, regarding concern for the welfare of a woman.

On arrival at the scene, the body of a woman was found inside the property in Melton Road.

One passer-by, who did not want to be named, told the Mercury

that he heard screaming in the area earlier in the afternoon, at around 4.15pm.

East Midlands Ambulance Service was also called to the scene and remained there alongside a heavy police presence for several hours.

A force spokesperson said “full inquiries” were carried out at the scene.

In a statement on Saturday night, the force said: “The death of the woman is not believed to be suspicious and a file will be submitted to HM Coroner.”

A 37-year-old man from Leicester was arrested on suspicion of a public order incident in relation to the initial call received by police.

Following further inquiries, the force confirmed that he has since been released with no further action.

After the police operation in

Thurmaston village on Friday evening, residents said they were “shocked and worried”.

One staff member at a nearby pub, who didn’t want to be named, was on duty when police arrived at the scene.

They said: “We heard all the sirens going past and then people started saying something really bad had happened.

“There were lots of rumours and everyone was talking about it.

“It’s a massive shock because it’s just a tiny village. And because it’s so small people were worried in case they knew someone involved.

“It’s awful. Everyone at work said be careful going home and it is a bit scary.”

Shop owner Naresh Chauhan 56, told us: “We’ve been here for three years and we know all the locals.

“It’s a wonderful area. But it is a bit of shock to have something happen on your doorstep.”

A local businessman, who did not wish to be named, said there was a sense of shock at whatever had happened, adding: “It’s normally just a lovely quiet village.”
