Cort begins his bid to win the PGA title
TOP county golf professional Matthew Cort (Beedles Lake) is competing in the PGA Championship at Wentworth, which got under way today.
Cort, a PGA Cup pro, had his first practice round over the course on Tuesday.
It is the seventh occasion in which he has competed in this event, one of the top tournaments on the European Tour.
Cort said: “I am looking forward to competing at Wentworth and am delighted to have the chance to play there again. It is a tough, challenging course.
“Last week I played in the European British Challenge Tour over the National course at The Belfry and finished on 14-under-par-274, after my rounds of 72-65-67-70 when I was in 12th spot.
“So that was good preparation for this week.
“I finished second to Paul O’Hara in the play-offs and when he pulled out of Wentworth a few days ago, I was offered the place and was thrilled to accept.”
FORMER Leicestershire and Rutland top amateur golfer Gary Wolstenholme, now a European senior tour professional, had a high finish in the Legends Open de France championship hosted by Jean van de Velde, which ended on Saturday.
He was joint third with his 9-under-par-204 total in the 54-holes tournament at St. Cloud, Paris, after his rounds of 66-69-69.
Wolstenholme opened with a bogey free card which included five birdies.
They came back-to-back at the 4th and 5th on the front nine of the course.
Then he added three more coming back – at the 11th, 13th and 15th holes – to move up to equal first in the strong field.
This week he is competing in another tour tournament in Scotland, where he is keen to build on this strong performance.
