Hard-fought point for the plucky Cubs

-

LEICESTER’S second team, the Lion Cubs picked up a match point in an eventful National League fixture at Mildenhall on Sunday.

Mildenhall won the meeting 47-41 in a meeting that was marred by falls throughout that saw the withdrawal through injury of Luke Ruddick and Sam Hagon on the home side.

The Lion Cubs lost points too through crashes but managed to stay in contention thanks to the efforts of the Thompson twins, Dan and Joe who outpointed their opponents in the final heat to ensure Leicester went home with a bonus away league point for keeping the score within a six-point margin.

It was a battling performance from the team, who faced Mildenhall without captain Joe Lawlor, who had announced his retirement from the sport the week before.

undeterred, the team mounted a determined challenge and led by the Thompsons they remained competitive throughout.

The twins received solid support from Ben Trigger, who raced to his best score since signing for the club this season. The 15-year-old began slowly with a last place, but then reeled off two important wins and added a further two points to his total to end the afternoon as Leicester’s third-top scorer.

Meanwhile, Tom Spencer rounded off his day with a win after twice falling in earlier races and Leicester’s two reserves Kai Ward and Mickie Simpson deserved more for their efforts.

Mildenhall 47: Jordan Jenkins 10+1 points, Jason Edwards 10, Elliot Kelly 8+2, Sam Bebee 7+1, Sam Hagon 7+1, Nathan Ablitt 5+1 and Luke Ruddick 0 Leicester 41: Joe Thompson 14 points, Dan Thompson 11+2, Ben Trigger 8+1, Tom Spencer 4, Mickie Simpson 4, Kai Ward 0 and Joe Lawlor (rider replacement)
