A MEAT and potato pie has been named Supreme Champion at this year’s British Pie Awards.

The pie, from Nottinghamshire firm Bowring Butchers, topped the list of more than 800 entries at the awards in Melton.

Now in its 13th year, rivals ranged from goats’ cheese, spinach and sweet potato to cherrywood smoked pulled pork and black pudding, but this year’s favourite pie took the judges back to a northern classic.

They praised Bowring Butchers’ crisp yet rich pastry and mouthwateringly creamy sauce in the meat and potato pie.

Bowring Butchers also beat 36 other contenders for best beef and cheese pie, with their steak and stilton creation.

The awards, rearranged from earlier in the year, featured 23 categories.

All pies had to consist of a filling totally encased in pastry and baked and all must be commercially available in the UK.

Runners up to this year’s Supreme Champion were a rhubarb and custard dessert pie made by Portsmouth’s Mad K Pies and an authentic Melton Mowbray pork pie made by Dickinson and Morris and sold in Melton’s Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe.

Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association and host of the British Pie Awards, said: “Each and every year it is fantastic to see the range of delicious pies submitted to the British Pie Awards and this year was no different.

“Bowring Butchers submitted a truly scrumptious pie, and it was agreed across the board that their classic meat and potato masterpiece was the Supreme Champion of 2021. Congrats, Bowring Butchers.”
