Pub in the running to be best for dog owners
VENUE ONE OF SIX TO MAKE SHORTLIST FOR NATIONAL PRIZE
A PUB is in the running to be named Britain’s best for dog owners.
The Railway, in Hinckley, which is part of the Steamin’ Billy group, is one of six locals to have been shortlisted in the specialist category in the Great British Pub Awards.
The pub, in Station Road in the town, welcomes well-behaved dogs in the bar areas and in the garden and ensures water bowls and canine treats are readily available.
The best pub for dogs category of the awards is sponsored by website Rover. com.
It said research has shown that 58 per cent of British dog owners now centre their social plans on their pet rather than partner.
The research also showed 74 per cent confessed to putting their pet’s needs above those of their friends.
About 60 per cent per cent of the survey respondents said their family ranked below their dog when they planned social occasions.
Rover.com said the best pub for dogs shortlist was devised after two rigorous rounds of judging.
The Railway is up against: Flying Childers Inn, in Stanton in Peak, Derbyshire; The Maltings, in Warrington, Cheshire; The Leicester Arms, in Penshurst, Tonbridge, Kent; The Cow at Dalbury, in Ashbourne, Derbyshire; and Stag Inn in Dolgellau, Gwynedd.
Adem Fehmi, canine behaviourist for Rover.com, said: “We’ve been through a period of time like no other, but throughout, our pets have been right by our side.
“Bonds have become stronger than ever, so it’s no surprise people want to maintain the same amount of time with their dog post-lockdown.
“It’s fantastic to see just how many establishments are now catering for the country’s pups and the lengths they’re going to in creating inclusive environments. Let’s hope it continues.”
The winner is set to be revealed on September 28.
