COUNTY ATHLETES SHINE IN MULTI-SPORT FINALS HELD AT LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY
YOUNG athletes from Leicestershire won eight medals, including three golds, at the 2021 School Games National Finals at Loughborough University campus.
Supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, the event saw more than 1,300 youngsters compete across 10 sports, including disability disciplines, following the lifting of lockdown restrictions.
The 10 sports were: athletics, BMX, cricket, cycling, hockey, laser run, netball, triathlon, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.
These were the local medal winners:
James Taylor, 16, of Leicestershire, won the high jump and he was also in the Athens team which came first in the 4 x 100m hurdles.
Jamie Carrott, 16, of Loughborough, came third in the boys’ 200m and was also part of Team Beijing that came third in the 4 x 100m hurdles.
Lucy Weston, 16, of Market Harborough, was part of Team Sciver that came first in cricket.
Charlie Neece, of Melton
Mowbray, came third in the Aquathon boys’ B final.
Brady Chambers, of Moira, alongside his partner, came second in the boys’ wheelchair tennis doubles.
Etty Sisson, of Newbold Coleorton, came second in the girls’ 300m.
The School Games National Finals can also be the springboard for future success, as these statistics prove:
75 of the athletes representing Team GB at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo have competed at the School Games National Finals.
32 of the 160 athletes who represented Team GB at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio competed at the School Games. This equates to 20 per cent of the team.
17 former School Games competitors won medals at the Rio Olympics including six golds. These included swimming champion Adam Peaty, pictured, and GB hockey players Lily Owsley and
Georgie Twigg.
