KASPER Schmeichel predicted he would win the Premier League two years before he did so with Leicester City, his father Peter has revealed.

Schmeichel junior joined Leicester from Leeds United in the summer of 2011 and has been with the club ever since, taking the captain’s armband from Wes Morgan following his retirement this summer, writes Amie Wilson.

He was a key member of the squad which won the Championship title in 2014 as City made it back to the Premier League after over a decade away.

It was during that season that the City captain made a prediction that would come true just over two years later. “Let me tell you a story about Kasper.

“I flew over from Denmark, with a friend, to watch a game at Old Trafford and invited my son along,” Peter Schmeichel, a Premier League winner with Manchester United, wrote in an extract from his new autobiography, published in the Times.

“We had seats in one of the boxes and before the match they brought round the Premier League trophy, so that guests had the chance to be photographed with it. When the trophy came to our box, we duly took our pictures.

“Then Kasper said to everyone present ‘The next time I hold this trophy it will be because I’ve won it. Next time you see my picture with it will be when it is mine’.

“This was March 2014, when he was playing for Leicester City in the Championship.

“Two years and two months later he had it in his hands again, as a Premier League winner.

“How many people would bet on themselves in that way, at a time their club was not even in the Premier

League, never mind a 5,000-1 shot to win it? And not just bet on themselves — but go and back it up?”

Schmeichel has played over 400 games for City and was an ever present in the season they lifted the Premier League title under manager Claudio Ranieri.

He has also helped City make it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and win the first FA Cup in the club’s history, putting in a man-of-the-match performance against Chelsea at Wembley in May.
