Security in home to be offered free to hundreds

- By NICK DAWSON nicholas.dawson@reachplc.com

HUNDREDS of households are to be offered free security upgrades to deter criminals in a major crackdown on burglary in four county towns and villages.

Residents in Hinckley, Castle Donington, Lutterworth and Melton will be offered measures such as high security door locks, window locks, door alarms and window alert alarms as part of an investment from the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund.

All four will get £108,000, with additional match funding of up to £47,000.

The money will also be spent on new and upgraded CCTV cameras in all four areas, and the installation and maintenance of ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras.

Councillor Michael Mullaney, from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, said the new security features will help tackle anti-social behaviour and crime in the town.

He said: “Speaking to people around Hinckley, feeling safe and secure in their homes and on the streets is something that is important to them.

“I hope that this investment in making homes in the town centre more secure will help people feel more safe in their homes and will help prevent opportunistic burglaries and breakins.

“Over £60,000 of this funding will be spent on upgrading our already successful CCTV network, with an additional eight cameras.

“I would urge eligible householders to take advantage of the funding available to upgrade their own home security.”

A total of £432,000 is available from the Safer Streets Fund, run from the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Rupert Matthews.

Up to 1,104 households will be offered free security upgrades worth a total of £186,000 across the four areas.

All households within the eligibility catchment area will be informed by post.

Residents who receive a leaflet are urged to call the number provided to arrange a booking slot.
