Conference has further harmed Labour unity

-

AS a supporter of Labour, albeit with strong leanings to the left, I feel that in the wake of the party conference, leader Sir Keir Starmer has further disunited the party.

In his almost pathological desire to distance himself from Corbyn he has thrown Labour voters at large into disarray.

Preaching to his converted at conference is something of a piece of cake compared with convincing Labour voters at large to come into the fold, let alone members of other parties.

As regards his own integrity, well he’s already broken a number of the pledges he made when he was interviewed for the leadership. And what about his part in the defeat at the last election by advocating Remain? This did far more damage than anything else, Corbyn and all.

Ignoring the result of the referendum was the major cause of Labour being defeated in its long-standing key areas.

Deputy Angela Rayner does herself no justice in using such gutter language as “scum” to criticise the government, despite some frustrations with it which I’m sure many of us share.

It may be the sort of language you would use to party members behind closed doors, but not to the public at large. Certainty, it is the type of behaviour to distance the Conservative and Liberal Democrat supporters you would wish to win over.

If further developments follow this pattern, I may well be voting Liberal Democrat as a protest, unless those to the left of the party form their own by breaking away, as far too many Labour MPs are more concerned about retaining their seats than adhering to sound socialist principles.

I do hope others will write in with criticisms, more particularly if they entirely disagree with mine and are happy with a Labour Party being overtaken by the Blairites.
