Men need educating, says Lineker as Met responds to Sarah Everard murder

-

FOOTBALLING legend Gary Lineker says men need educating as the Met Police vow to protect women and girls following the murder of Sarah Everard.

The former Leicester City striker commented on a report that says 80 women have allegedly been killed at the hands of men since Ms Everard’s death six months ago.

Lineker first tweeted: “Extremely powerful. More needs to be done to protect women.”

It prompted a reaction from followers on Twitter, one of whom said: “It’s not about protecting us. We don’t want protection. We want freedom from violence.

“That takes a huge cultural shift for men. Men have to stop attacking and killing women.”

The Match of the Day presenter responded: “Absolutely agree. But how do we help get that freedom for women?

“I certainly don’t know what the answer is. Perhaps, though, us men speaking out showing our disdain for other men might be a starting point?”

Another follower added: “The focus should be on educating men rather than protecting women.

“Women shouldn’t have to change their behaviour. Men should.”

Lineker replied: “Agreed. Should be an important part of boys’/young men’s education.”

The comments come as the Metropolitan Police has advised anyone stopped by a lone plain clothes officer to check their credentials.

An investigation is under way to see if serving officer Wayne Couzens committed more crimes before he kidnapped, raped and murdered Ms Everard.

The Met announced it will no longer deploy lone plain clothes officers after a sentencing hearing was told Couzens had used lockdown rules to falsely arrest Ms Everard during the abduction.
