An uplifting experience you simply can’t miss

Review: Hairspray at Curve in Leicester

- By TESS RUSHTON leicestermercury.co.uk

I’VE lost count of the number of times I’ve been to see Hairspray, but I never tire of it and this was no exception.

In fact, it was extra special as I haven’t been to the theatre in such a long time.

I could feel the buzz of excitement across the Curve auditorium as I found my seat.

As soon as Katie Brace, who plays Tracy Turnblad, blasted out “Good Morning Baltimore”, I knew we were in for a treat.

That opening number set the scene for the rest of the show, the singing and choreography was incredible throughout, the whole cast was amazing to watch, the costumes and set were slick. As the song says – welcome to the 60s.

Every number was well executed, my particular favourites in the first half were the aforementioned Good Morning Baltimore, Mama I’m a Big Girl Now, I Can Hear The Bells, and Big Blonde and Beautiful – what a voice from Motormouth Maybelle played by Brenda Edwards.

And the second half of the show was equally as good. I absolutely loved You’re Timeless To Me with Edna Turnblad played by Alex Bourne and Wilbur Turnblad played by Norman Pace – that’s half of comedy duo Hale and Pace for those that remember them.

The comedy timing was wonderful and they had the audience in the palm of their hands.

Without Love was just perfect as was (It’s) Hairspray, and by the time we got the the finale, You Can’t Stop the Beat, the whole auditorium was on its feet enjoying the moment.

Well done to the whole cast, you put in an extra special performance, we had a blast.

Hairspray is at Curve until Saturday, October 9. Tickets range from £42 to £10.
