There is nothing wrong with having ambition to play at the highest level
‘SCHMEICHEL AND FOFANA COMMITTED TO CLUB DESPITE ALL TRANSFER TALK’
THERE is “nothing wrong” with Leicester City players stressing their ambition to reach the top, manager Brendan Rodgers said after Kasper Schmeichel and Wesley Fofana signalled their hopes of making moves in the future.
City captain Schmeichel, who first moved to the King Power Stadium in 2011, has said he hopes to play for another club before he retires, and that only having had one season in the Champions League gnaws away at him.
Fofana, meanwhile, this week listed Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City among the clubs it would be a “dream” to play for.
Rodgers believes City have the ambition to match their players’ hopes, and does not question either Schmeichel nor Fofana’s commitment to their current employers.
“Kasper has been such a great servant for the club,” Rodgers told his press conference yesterday.
“He’s been first class since I’ve come here, but over that 10-year period, he’s been sensational for the club.
“I’ve not got no worries over
Kasper’s mentality and commitment.
“I’ve not seen either of the interviews so I can’t really comment but Wesley, you see how comfortable he is in the environment, and the great strides he has made in a short period of time.
“Every player will have ambitions to be at the highest level, but it doesn’t mean they’re always thinking about leaving here to do that.
“This is a club that is ambitious. The two players are very committed to doing that.
“We’re a group that has won silverware and we want to see if we can win some more.
“Both of those players are first class.
“Wesley is committed to here and we can’t wait to have him back, and with Kasper, his story shows a commitment to here.
“But there’s nothing wrong with having that ambition to play at the very highest level.”
Schmeichel is under contract with City for another 18 months, the Dane among a glut of players whose deals expire in 2023.
He will be 36 when that contract comes to an end.
Fofana, meanwhile, is on a contract with City until 2025 after signing a long-term deal upon his arrival from Saint-Etienne a year ago.
His performances in the Premier
League at a young age have already prompted rumours of moves to an elite side, with Chelsea the latest to be linked.
Reports in France yesterday suggested the Premier League leaders have registered their interest in the 20-year-old, but asked if he was aware of any approach for
Fofana, Rodgers said: “No, not at all.”
