A DRIVE-IN Living Nativity is set to take place in the centre of Melton for the second year in a row.

The event, run by the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs, allows visitors to get into the Christmas spirit and enjoy the nativity without having to leave their cars.

It is being held at Melton Market on Sunday, December 19, at 4.30pm, with the audience listening in to the nativity through their car radios – and with real animals all part of the show.

Guests are also encouraged to decorate their cars with fairy lights and tinsel, to make the event as Christmassy as possible.

The stage will be an articulated lorry, flanked by two tractors on loan for the event, with plenty of angels, shepherds with sheep, and kings on horses – not to mention the little donkey. There will also be a number of vintage tractors, a telehandler, and the north star, along with plenty of Christmas spirit.

The Leicestershire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs hopes the event will bring together everyone in the community, especially its 500 rural young people who have spent the past two years taking part in the clubs via virtual meetings and competitions.

Along with providing funding for the federation, the event will also support the Farming Community Network, a voluntary organisation and charity close to the hearts of the clubs’ members that supports farmers and their families when times get tough.

The nativity will also support Rainbows Hospice for Children in Loughborough, which provides specialist respite, palliative care, and end-of-life care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions in the East Midlands.

County chairman Greg Parkes, said: “We wanted to grow on the success of last year’s Covid-secure event and offer something really special for our members this Christmas, but we also wanted to give something back to the local community and support a worthwhile charities.

“The Drive-In Living Nativity is ticking all these boxes.

“We are very excited and really looking forward to welcoming old faces and new.”
