Schmeichel ranked world’s seventh best goalkeeper
KASPER Schmeichel is the seventh best goalkeeper in the world, writes Luke Pawley.
That’s where he was ranked in this year’s Yashin Trophy, presented alongside the Ballon d’Or by France Football.
The award recognises the best goalkeeper in the world and Leicester City stopper Schmeichel was among this year’s nominees.
Handed out at the prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony, the trophy was previously won by Liverpool’s Allisson in 2019.
After being cancelled last year due to the pandemic, Schmeichel was up for the award this year along with nine other goalkeepers.
Schmeichel, right, was ranked seventh ahead of Sami Handanovic (Inter Milan), Keylor
Navas (Paris Saint-Germain) and Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid).
The Dane was beaten by Aston Villa rival Emi
Martinez, who finished in sixth after a fine calendar year for the West Midlands club.
In ascending order, Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Ederson (Man City), Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid), Edouard Mendy (Chelsea) and Gianluigi Donnarumma (Paris SaintGermain) made up the top five. Schmeichel recently revealed his hopes of playing for another club before he retires, in the same week Wesley Fofana reeled off a list of “dream clubs”.
When asked about the players’ comments, Rodgers was quick to praise their commitment to the club.
“Kasper has been such a great servant for the club,” Rodgers said.
“He’s been first class since I’ve come here, but over that 10-year period, he’s been sensational for the club. I’ve not got no worries over Kasper’s mentality and commitment.”
