WORK on 199 new homes is expected to begin in Melton at the start of the new year.

Barratt Homes North Midlands has been granted planning permission to begin work on an 18.5-acre estate, called Kings Meadow, on the outskirts of the town.

It has further plans for the town but a final decision on a planning application is still to be made.

The Kings Meadow properties will be a mix of two, three, and four-bedroom homes - with 15 per cent - or 30 of them - being deemed “affordable”. The company says it will include wildlife conservation measures on the site, including “hedgehog highways”, bat boxes and bird boxes.

Mark Cotes, managing director at Barratt Homes North Midlands, said: “Being given the green light for this development edges us closer to delivering more much-needed homes to this area of Leicestershire.

“We look forward to presenting our plans for the site to local homebuyers when homes become available for sale in 2022.

“This upcoming work is another boost to the region and will provide a new and enticing opportunity to those looking to take the next step on the property ladder.”

The company’s application to build a further 266 homes in the area was previously rejected by Melton Borough Council.

It has lodged an appeal and the final judgement will be made by a government planning inspector at a hearing scheduled to begin next week.

The council said in a letter to local people in November: “An appeal has been made to the Secretary of State in respect of the site.

“It follows the refusal of planning permission by this council.”

The appeal is to be decided at a hearing to be held at 10am next Tuesday.

“Any comments already made following the original application for planning permission (unless they are expressly confidential) have been forwarded to the Planning Inspectorate and copied to the appellant and will be taken into account by the inspector in deciding the appeal.”
