Counting the reasons why Tigers are on top

-

WE welcome, as long-term Tigers supporters, the wonderful feeling of seeing them sitting comfortably, and convincingly, at the top of the Permiership table, unbeaten. How has this come about after some lean times in recent seasons?

Undoubtedly, the appointment of head coach Steve Borthwick (pleasingly, not a person who shows off ) is a major contribution. He has clearly identified the need to have close units, pairings and not just individual brilliance.

Tigers have always had star players. Just now they are playing as a carefully constructed team.

The forwards play as a very forceful and strong unit and they are the best. Good individuals have been recruited from abroad but have become part of a team.

A half-back pairing is vital and we have the best and when George Ford leaves we have to be sure we still will have. The signing of Handre Pollard is good news indeed.

In recruitment Tigers are famous worldwide – never more so than just now.

In the backs, there are increasing signs of wingers bring brought into the game with quick passing and shrewd kicking. Our new full-back has been well coached (another feature at Welford Road – do not underestimate the coaches’ part) and he is now playing for England.

All sides will want to play at their best to beat Tigers and it guarantees exciting matches. Harlequins were good and ran us close. What one notices is how good our defence is, not just the scoring ability.

The strength of the squad is another feature – keeping players happy to share the limelight, as some are not always going to be playing.

When we need replacements long-term to cover injuries or within matches, we are able to cope.

Well done to all at Welford Road. I’m really proud of this set-up and I’ve followed Tigers for over 70 years.

Mike Ross, Wigston
