City fighters show off their skills for the home fans
POINTS WINS FOR MURNEY ON HER PRO DEBUT ALONG WITH BLOCKLEY AND BROWN-WINGFIELD AT SHOW STAGED AT MORNINGSIDE ARENA
BOXING returned to Leicester’s Morningside Arena when Carl Greaves promoted a show with 10 fights on the bill.
Three city-based fighters were in action in front of a lively and supportive crowd.
Humberstone middleweight Kenan Brown-Wingfield, 23, made a successful return to the ring after the pandemic and an eye injury.
Brown-Wingfield started aggressively against Blackpool’s Craig Sumner and kept that momentum up throughout the fight with wicked body shots, impactful uppercuts and a lead left hook that almost led to a stoppage.
In the end, the fight went the distance with Wingfield winning a clear cut 40-36 decision on referee Kevin Parker’s scorecard. Commonwealth Games silver medallist Paige Murney, 26, made her professional debut at lightweight after a successful amateur career. Murney, of Beaumont Leys, showed her technical boxing ability by fighting behind a jab and consistently working to the body with well- placed left and right hooks against her Polish opponent Karina Kopinska, who was out-classed over six rounds.
Referee Chris Dean scored the fight 60-54 in Murney’s favour much to the delight of the large group of fans who came to support her.
Southpaw welterweight Callum Blockley, 26, boxed his way to a six-round decision win over Danny Little who seemed content to cover up and survive to the end.
Blockley, who fought Little at the same venue in 2018, showed no signs of rust after almost two years out of the ring and will likely challenge for his first professional title next year.
