Arrests in ‘intimidating’ atmosphere after big match

-

POLICE made a number of arrests when violence flared outside the King Power Stadium after Leicester’s City’s victory over Liverpool on Tuesday night.

One home fan told the Mercury he had been shocked to witness quite a few skirmishes as supporters left the ground following City’s unexpected 1-0 win.

He said the post-match atmosphere had been “intimidating” and questioned whether the police presence had been adequate to control the outbreak of trouble. He added: “This type of behaviour is occurring far too often and needs nipping in the bud.”

Yesterday, police confirmed that three people - all from Leicester were arrested at the King Power Stadium during or after the match.

Another was dealt with on the spot with a “community resolution”, which allows police to deal with low-level offences without recourse to arrests or formal criminal proceedings.

A police spokesman gave details of the arrests and explained what action had been taken.

He said: “Three people were arrested for public order offences following some disorder at the Leicester City game.

“A 50-year-old man, from Leicester, was arrested on suspicion of affray.

“He was subsequently released under investigation.

“A 20-year-old man, also from Leicester, was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating. He was given a conditional caution.

“A third man, aged 32 and from Leicester, was arrested and released with no further action.

“One person was dealt with by way of a community resolution following a minor public order offence.

“Football matches are categorised and staffing levels considered in line with a number of factors.

“When the disorder broke out following the action on the pitch, additional specialist resources – the dog unit – were called upon for assistance.”

Earlier, City became just the second side this season to beat titlechasing Liverpool, with a 59thminute goal from substitute Ademola Lookman.

City pulled off the win despite the absence of several first-team players.

After the final whistle, City boss Brendan Rodgers hailed his players’ “heroic performance” in the victory over the Reds.
