Leicester Mercury

Let’s hope that things finally look up in 2022

-

THE old year is, once again, perhaps best forgotten in many ways.

We have lost a lot of friends, relations and famous people (most recently Raymond Illingworth, the Leicestershire cricket captain at one time).

We must, however, look forward, positively, to the new year.

Obviously one hopes for less interferences to our lives from Covid, and that travel will be easier and that there will be greater ability to reach countries that are at present out of bounds.

As for the government, it would be nice to have a clearer perspective of aims, no matter who is in charge. Boris is certainly not perfect, but is there another name we can rely on?

Sportswise – we can probably expect Leicester City to finish somewhere in mid-table.

They have a limited squad, numbers wise, especially when injuries escalate.

I do feel our manager has coped admirably during a difficult time and has a good character.

Leicester Tigers have, of course, been supreme, brilliantly led by Steve Borthwick and his team, and the top position in the league has been theirs all season so far, with not a single draw or defeat.

In cricket, I hope Grace Road does not just depend on who can hit a ball into Park Hill Drive the most in the variety of limited oversized competitions.

Paul Nixon is a splendid leader and is detailed in his approach to helping the changing squad.

One hopes general viewing will be regularly possible and that the crop of younger players will develop into a stronger unit.

It would be nice to see more of helping each other and those in need and less selfishness could be recommended.

It may be rather a lot to hope for, all told, but a little more general happiness and hope for the better is indicated.

I wish all your readers a happy new year.
